Health and Safety Rebates for the Energy Savings Program
The CleanBC Energy Savings Program offers more than just energy-saving upgrades—it also supports the health and safety of your home. When you make energy-efficient improvements such as installing heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, insulation, or windows/doors, you may qualify for a health and safety rebate of up to $800. This rebate covers the remediation of common health and safety hazards that could be discovered during the upgrade process, including pests, asbestos, and mould. These issues can significantly impact your indoor air quality and overall health, which is why addressing them as part of your home’s energy upgrade is essential for creating a safe, comfortable, and healthy living environment.
For example, you may encounter mould growth behind walls during insulation installation, or pests such as rodents or insects may be discovered when windows or doors are replaced.
Additionally, asbestos may be found in older homes during the installation of heat pumps or other upgrades. These types of hazards are not only harmful to your home’s structure but also pose serious health risks, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. The health and safety rebate is designed to assist homeowners in addressing these concerns effectively. Depending on your household income, the rebate can cover up to 95% of the remediation costs (for Income Level 1) or up to 60% (for Income Level 2), with a maximum rebate of $800 per home. Income Level 3 participants are not eligible for these health-related rebates.
To qualify for the rebate, homeowners must meet the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program’s income eligibility requirements, live in a primary residence that has been assessed for eligibility, and have the upgrades installed by a registered program contractor. All health and safety upgrades must be completed in conjunction with an eligible energy-saving upgrade, such as a heat pump or insulation, and the remediation must specifically address health hazards like pest infestations, asbestos, or mould. For instance, the removal of mould from the walls or ceilings of a home after the installation of insulation or addressing pest damage in attics, crawl spaces, or in areas where windows or doors are replaced, can be covered by the rebate.
Once the work is completed by an approved contractor, the rebate application is submitted, and the rebate amount is deducted from the final cost of the upgrade. Homeowners can contact an Energy Savings Program coach for assistance with the application process or to confirm eligibility for both energy and health-related rebates. This comprehensive approach ensures that you’re not only improving your home’s energy efficiency but also safeguarding the health and safety of your family.
